absolutely spot on. brilliant piece Omer. As an immigrant who came here a decade ago I have witnessed this decline in the past 4 years. The immigration policy thru which I qualified was highly geared towards ensuring Canada got the immigrants who would immediately benefit the society and provide the country with a future generations of established contributing immigrant second generations. The system is now totally broken. How did the leadership let this happen? It almost seems there was no control or foresight.
The biggest fear is if there is actual leadership out there that can recover from this damage.
Given the dysfunctional immigration system in Germany, I have often advised to try Canada instead. I learnt from the responses that there are similar problems in Canada as in Germany, UK, Ireland... But at least the chances of entering the country are better.
Until everyone is free, no one is free. Migration to a seemingly rich country, which seems rich because of the wealth of some people, is not a solution to the world's problems.
Really enjoyed this article, particularly your description of the Canadian dream. It truly has been a failure of government policy and direction - particularly galling with the federal service growing 40% while government functioning has become increasingly ineffectual. It feels like failure all the way down.
"But then, after being back here for some time, I saw it myself. Driving through the Greater Toronto Area, I saw how much more congested everything had become. There were too many people with too few places to live. The increasing number of homeless people on the street. The rise in violent crime. The staggering toll of the opioid crisis. The unprecedented wave of international students, many of whom were sold a bill of goods that turned out to be faulty."
If you feel this way, just imagine how those of us who can remember when Canada had a population of 20 million (or less) must feel .... 41 million people (mostly jammed into several cities) is simply insane ....
